I admit it. I like to play computer games. I know, I know. I
should act "grown up" and read the Wall Street Journal, but I
can't help it. I'll call it "hanging on to my youth". Following, I'll tell you about some of my favorite computer games. These aren't really "official" reviews, but just my opinions. My favorite game of all time is Jagged Alliance by Sir-Tech. This is a turn-based, tactical wargame where you hire a team of mercenaries to conduct missions of espionage, reconnaisance, and just general mayhem. You start out with very little money in one sector of a pretty expansive map. Your main job is pretty much to stay alive and take out the opposition. Using everything from combat knives, to .357 pistols, to gas grenades and M-16s, you go full out against the enemy. The storyline isn't very deep, but you know what needs to be done. What really draws you in, though, are the character's themselves. They talk to you (sometimes way too much) and all of them have a unique profile, characterization, and attitude. Some of them won't even work with others and will quit your side. Some of them get so blood-hungry that once they start shooting, you can't get them to stop (even if they are in open ground getting shot at). The best part of the game design is in using Action Points. Each mercenary has a number of points he or she (and yes, there are female mercs too) can spend to perform actions such as moving, taking cover, and firing weapons. The action point system allows you to shoot at an enemy, walk to the nearest cover, and kneel down to lessen the chance you'll get shot back. Sir-Tech is supposed to release Jagged Alliance II this fall, and it looks tremendous. The terrible graphics from the first one have been completely redone in crisp SVGA glory. I can't wait... My opinions on Starcraft, Riven and Jedi Knight are all coming soon... (Like it or not :) |
